Oswegatchie Campsites

Picture
Our campsites are not typical of what to expect when you hear the word "campsite". During the late 1940s and early 1950s, many of the FFA advisers who were building up our facility, had just gotten out of the military. They were tired of barrack style accommodations like they saw in the military and wanted something different. They realized with all the land owned by Oswegatchie, they could cut roads and trails to the scenic bays and points around the property. Once they developed access, they were able to clear campsites for the FFA boys to use.

Once the tarp style tents they were using started to age, they constructed structure cabins on the sites. This allowed them to have basic structures, but nothing too elaborate.  There is no electricity at any campsite, and most have pit privies for bathrooms. On average, each campsite holds 17 people. Typically 15 people in the cabins and 2 people in the lean-tos.

These structures are basic, but almost every site has a great view. You can choose between sites near the main camp or sites 10 minutes from our lodges. We also have sites best paddled to and sites with just lean-tos. Tenting is an option at our most remote sites.

Our "Un" Typical Campsites

Campfire campsite in Autumn!
We have 12 campsites on our property. They each have 3 structure cabins and a lean-to. Our sites at Otter Way or Beaver Point do have 2 cabins that sleep 8 each. They are all stocked with mattresses. All campsites do have fire rings and wood sheds. Do not consider these to be typical campsites you see elsewhere They are suited for group retreats or for those who do not have tents. A great way to give a group a more unique experience.

Trout Pond Campsite

A rare view of Trout Pond via seaplane!
Our Trout Pond Site is set up for multiple tents, vehicles, and people. It can handle 45 people in an organized tent city. It does have 3 lean-tos. It is more remote, but can be accessed by cars. It has one outhouse, but is the only campsite on Trout Pond.  There is nothing like a quiet morning overlooking Trout Pond. Words can not describe how great this location can be, however you do need to prepare for camping.

Loons Campsite

Picture
Loons Campsite is a typical campsite, however, its best if you use a canoe or kayak to get there. It has a great view of the south end of our property, but the access road to it is very tough to drive. This site is a favorite among our patrons since paddling adds to the adventure.  As you look at the photo, its the point on the right.

Lepine Ridge

Picture
Lepine Ridge is the long narrow peninsula on the right.
Our Lepine Ridge site is our most remote site. Its best hiked or paddle to use it. Its only one lean-to with an outhouse 100 yards away. It sits on a peninsula that overlooks both Round Pond and the south end of Long Pond. If there is any place on the property that feels holy, its this incredible spot. There is no mattresses at this location and firewood must be gathered from the forest. Its for a more prepared camper.
